The 5 Main Types of Dog Coats

There is no universal agreement on how many types of dog coats there truly are and how they ought to be broken down. At Forever Love Puppies near Miami Florida, we’ve categorized our 22 dog breeds into five main coat categories so you can have a general idea of what grooming maintenance is required for which breeds.

Smooth/Short
Arguably the easiest to upkeep, smooth coats require the least amount of professional grooming maintenance, if at all. A quickly daily brushing in the morning with a slicker brush should suffice for these breeds, especially during the summer shedding season. Coming into Forever Love and Puppies for a grooming session won’t be a regular occurrence with dogs of this coat type.

Dog breeds Forever Love Puppies offers with this coat type include:

Beagle
French Bulldog
Boston Terrier
Chihuahua (short haired)
Double

Double-coated refers not to the coat length, but the presence of two layers of fur: a dense, soft layer of short hairs under coarser, longer guard hairs that help protect the coat from extreme temperatures and water. Double-coated dogs need extensive grooming to make sure loose and dead hairs in the undercoat don’t remain there and stimulate hair growth. Double-coats appear thick and heavy, but it is absolutely vital that dog owners don’t shave their coats in a misguided effort to cool them off in hot weather. In reality, all this does is destroy their coat and insulation and make them more susceptible to sunburns and bug bites.

They can come in long or short types. Longer-furred double-coated breeds will require additional trimming of their hair when it gets too long, plus the daily brushing. This will prevent annoying mats and tangles that are not only painful and irritating to the dog, but costly if a serious grooming session is needed to alleviate the issue. Semi-regular appearances at the salon should be expected for these longer-furred breeds -- shorter coated dogs can get by with regular and thorough brushings.

Cocker Spaniel (long and silky)

Wire
Wire-haired breeds have rough, coarse hair that needs to be trimmed, plucked, and stripped regularly to keep the coat healthy. They are often quite suitable for individuals or families with allergies since they do not shed, but this also means frequent salon visits every few weeks to upkeep their coat are in the future with these breeds. Their coats should not be shaved, as this causes the coat to lose its original wiriness, so consistent and intensive grooming is the only proper way to maintain their looks.

Miniature Schnauzer

Curly
Beautiful and soft, curly-coated dogs are highly coveted but not for the family who is not prepared to spend time or money looking after their fur. These breeds are versatile in their appearance; with fur that can grow so long, it is up to the owner to decide which style suits them best. However, it is generally recommended that family curly-coated dogs are kept with relatively short hair (ask a groomer) to reduce the probability of mats, burrs, and dirt. Dogs with curly coats should be taken to the groomer and brushed, trimmed, and buzzed every few weeks. In between, it is up to the owners to brush them out regularly with a slicker brush to prevent matting, which is difficult to get rid of and can cause the dog pain.

Poodle
Bichon Frise

Long
Long-coated breeds are sophisticated and elegant with long, silky fur that parts along the middle of their back and sweeps down their sides. In order to keep their fur glossy and healthy, these breeds need daily grooming to remove dead hairs, encourage new hair growth, and prevent annoying tangles. Depending on whether the owner wishes to keep the coat puppy-cut short or floor-length long, semi-regular or very frequent visits to the grooming salon may be necessary to keep their hair evenly trimmed. If the show-dog look isn’t desired, long-haired breeds can always have their hair clipped to a shorter, more manageable length, so long as they aren’t double-coated.
