YORKSHIRE TERRIER

First spotted in Yorkshire in England during the industrial boom when Scottish workers came down to England, the Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog with a big personality. Originally used by mine workers to hunt rodents, they eventually became popular as home pets during the Victorian times. The breed crossed over to the United States in 1972 and by 1985, it was registered and officially acknowledged by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Suspected to be a crossbreed of the Clydesdale Terrier and the Waterside Terrier, the Yorkshire Terrier is popular for its soft and coat. This coat has the texture of a human hair and is non-shedding, so it has to be cut by the owners or it’ll impede the movement of the dog over time. While the Yorkshire Terrier is small, it by no means lacks the courage to pick a fight with dogs far bigger than it. While it is suitable for apartment and house living, it is not advised to keep a Yorkshire Terrier with children, as they’re known to bite when provoked. Though seen as a toy dog, the Yorkshire terrier sees itself as a guard dog and is protective of its owner. When properly trained, it’s an excellent companion dog.
